Item Description

A wonderful late 18th Century ormolu mounted Blue John urn, attributed to the workshop of Matthew Boulton.
The acorn finial with rope twist border, above pale veining and rich purple marble, with bold female masks to the sides, over palmette apron with spreading socle. Excellent quality throughout. Circa 1780.
Blue John is a rare Crystaline gemstone marble, unique to a single mine at Castleton, Derbyshire and much admired in the 18th century, as it is today by discerning, collectors. Matthew Boulton what is the finest exponent of ormolu sculpture in England in the 18th century.
