Item Description
A rare piece of 19th century Cornish folk art. Chip-carved oak box frame made specifically for the central, photographic portrait of a young woman. The carving is mainly of flowers, namely Lily-of-the-Valley and roses. Lily-of-the-Valley signifies humility, chastity, sweetness and purity. It is also said to bring luck in love. Whereas the rose expresses hope, promise and new beginnings. The elements of the frame are deeply cut, and boxed behind the original, Victorian glass. Even the support stand to the rear has been hand-carved. In very good, original condition.
