Item Description
An early 20th century impressionist-style oil on canvas painting of an industrial landscape by A. E. Wade (1889–1976). Annotated 'Digging Lock Pits' and 'New Dock, Grimsby'. A vibrant and energetic painting, enhanced by the impasto applied paint on the canvas. It suggests that the artist painted it in situ, 'en plein air', where the light and activity of the scene needed to be captured quickly. Signed and dated. (UK shipping £20)
Albert Edward Wade studied art at Birmingham c. 1911, moving to London in around 1917. He started teaching at Sheffield School of Art in 1921 and then moved on to teach at Grimsby School of Art in 1924, retiring in 1953. Throughout his teaching career he continued to paint for himself, finding inspiration from the industrial landscape of Grimsby Docks, particularly focussing on the construction of boats and buildings.
