Item Description
A naive slightly Lowry-esque, oil on board painting of 'The Old Jolly Smokers' pub and its adjacent trade yards. Despite it's primitiveness, the painting does have intrigue, and manages to draw your eye from the street, across the woodyard and into the distance, where we see a postwar high-rise block of flats. Signed with initials 'M E F'. (UK shipping £20)
The Old Jolly Smokers was a 19th century pub in an area known as the Mayorhold (Mares Hold) in Northampton. It was a cafe for the last few years of its existence before being demolished for a road widening scheme in 1966.
