Item Description
This fabulous skirt is a vintage Miao festival skirt. It dates to around 1970 with the woven striped panels probably earlier. The skirt is made up of a pleated body in hand loomed indigo dyed hemp with a deep appliqued border. The applique is really attractive, made up of black patches on red with the edges couched with yellow, red and grey/blue silk yarns. The applique is topped with a ribbon of silk brocade, in a pretty grey/blue colour. The skirt would have been worn at festivals when the Miao villages would meet through the year to trade, celebrate and look for partners. The costumes worn would show off the needle work skills of the wearer to a future husband. This skirt is in excellent condition. It has a few very small marks which are not really noticeable, but are to be expected considering its history. I've stretch mounted the skirt on linen covered canvas.
If you would like a Perspex box to cover the frame, then please ask for a quote. Museum grade Perspex will protect the skirt from fading if its to be hung in direct sunlight. I think they also make the piece look more contemporary.
