French Landscape Antique Oil Painting Attributed To Adrian Paul Allinson, 1920S

ANTIQUE ORIGINAL OIL ON BOARD PAINTING

Depicting a scene thought to be of a village in Southern France with a mountain dominating the background. The shape of the buildings from the village are echoed by the shape of the mountain. In the foreground, there are farms with rows of trees. Looking at the colour palette chosen I would say it is early morning on a bright sunny day.

The painting is unsigned but it has been professionally attributed to Adrian Paul Allinson (1890-1959). The stylised nature of the painting is typical of Allinson’s work, he became well-known for landscapes, particularly of Southern Europe and North Africa as well as Britain. Some of his works have been featured on some famous Railway travel posters of the period. He studied under Henry Tonks at the Slade School of Art, and later became associated with the Bloomsbury Group and the London Group before travelling widely, during WWII he was an official war artist. Throughout his career he exhibited widely including at the RA and in 1984 the was a retrospective of his work at the Fine Art Society.

This painting probably dates from the interwar period circa 1920s.

Provenance: there is an early 20th-century Rowley Gallery label verso.

In a later, yet complimentary simple off-white painted wooden frame.

The painting itself is largely in good condition, there is an old repair to one of the corners and the other corners are worn but other than that there are no further issues.
