Item Description

Original mid century portrait painting by Sam Walsh (1934-1989), 1970

By repute depicting the artist’s father. A typically zoomed-in perspective and large-scale portrait skilfully capturing the sitter’s character and expression depicting a life that has been well lived through every wrinkle.

Originally born in Ireland, Walsh later came to prominence in Liverpool in the 1960s where he was a well-known member of the beat scene as a visual artist and musician. He is sometimes referred to as a pop artist but his work spans a lot of different themes. He is perhaps most associated with portraiture and his most well-known work ‘Mike’s Brother’ a portrait of Paul McCartney sits in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London.

I would probably date this work to the 1970s but it could quite possibly sit from anywhere between the mid-1960s to the early 1980s.

Signed indistinctly to the lower left ‘Walsh’.

Framed and glazed in its original and simple satin metal frame with label verso for ‘Liverpool Fine Arts Ltd, Bold Street.’

The painting is in good vintage order with only minimal wear commensurate with age and no real damage. The frame is also in similarly good vintage condition.

Overall measurements 84cm x 58cm x 2cm.
