Item Description

ANTIQUE PORTRAIT BUST

Depicting Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa (c.63 BC-12 BC), a notable general, architect and the right-hand man and son-in-law to the Roman emperor Augustus. Amongst other things Agrippa was responsible for many military victories including 31 BC’s Battle of Actium defeating Marc Anthony and Cleopatra. He was also responsible for the construction of many of Rome’s important buildings including the original Parthenon.

This bust is either modelled after the ancient Roman marble ‘Bust of Agrippa’ in the Louvre or of another example in The Uffizi Gallery.

Made from terracotta with a void in the top of the head which can be used as a planter if desired.

Probably dating from the late 19th Century or possibly early 20th Century.

It is in good vintage condition with no serious structural issues but does have wear throughout as well as moss and lichen which all adds to its charm and aesthetic.

Approximate measurements 50cm high x 29cm wide x 24cm deep.
