Item Description
PAIR OF ANTIQUE FRENCH UPHOLSTERED CHAIRS
A pair of extremely romantic chairs with carved frames, painted in a buttery cream paint with sap green and orange details. naturally worn over time to great effect.
Naturally worn pink floral upholstery, which could quite conceivably be the original, stuffed with horsehair.
They are very much of the Directoire period style just nestled at the end of the French revolution and sandwiched between Louis XVI and the Empire period styles.
Probably dating from the late 18th century/early 19th century, we believe the chairs to be of the Directoire period (1789-1804) but could possibly be a tad later into the 19th century.
They are in good original country house condition and are both usable as chairs to sit in. They both have signs of wear and imperfections throughout but their original condition is part of the reason we fell for them, faded grandeur at its best. We think their original condition adds to their aesthetic and tells their story. There is some movement in their joints, in one chair more than the other, but both can be sat in. One of the chairs has an honest repair to one back leg. The webbing seems ok on both. There is a small amount of old woodworm present which we have treated for good measure.
Approximate measurements of each chair: 85cm high x 58cm wide x 57cm deep. The seat height is roughly 39cm.
