Item Description
120 x 210cm (47.2 x 86.6 inches), circa 1960. The strikingly modern design picked out in black and a bright coppery red over a richly variegated blond field. Natural dyes and hand spun wool.
There’s a lot to love about this beautiful vintage Gabbeh, with its wonderful abstract design, the warm golden tones and the dense, soft, heavy pile. The ends and selvages are original, unrestored and the whole is in largely perfect condition, one or two loose threads to the selvages being all we can find fault with.
Gabbeh rugs are known for their high quality and durability. With a thick pile, they provide a plush, comfortable feel underfoot. The word "gabbeh" comes from the Persian “gava”, meaning raw, natural, uncut. These primitive tribal rugs, originating among the Qashqai nomads, were largely ignored by the rug trade until the 1980’s when they were more widely popularised by the Iranian artist Parviz Tanavoli. Tanavolis experimentation with the form led to increased production and extensive export into the European market. The bold, modernist designs and traditional, high quality production make the gabbeh extremely adaptable to a wide variety of homes and styles.
