SWAROVSKI JEWELLERY HISTORY
Daniel Swarovski was born in Bohemia (Now Czech Republic) in 1862. Bohemia was the center for glass production and his father was a glass cutter who owned a small factory. It was there that Daniel became skilled in the art of glass-cutting.
In 1891 he registered a patent for a machine that could cut crystal to perfection, unlike current manual methods.
He founded the Swarovski in Wattens, Austria in 1895.
The 1920`s allowed for Swarovski crystal to be in high demand in fashion and dance. Family friend Ernest Lowenstein took charge of the distribution in the US.
Production ceases during WWII, Ernest Lowenstein however, had accumulated sufficient stock and continued supplying major US jewellery designers during this time. In the 1950`s crystal was a huge hit in haute-couture fashion and the silver screen. The material was a huge inspiration for Coco Chanel, and Hollywood movies like `Gentlemen Prefer Blondes` with Marilyn Monroe. In 1956 Daniel Swarovski dies at the age of 93. This same year, the Aurora Borealis effect (AB) was developed (it was named after the Northern Lights). Christian Dior was the first designer who worked with Crystal AB for his collections.
The release of the `Silver Crystal` figurines in the 1970`s prompted a worldwide collecting boom leading to the creation of the Swarovski Crystal Society in 1987. In 1989 the Swarovski logo changed from the Edelweiss flower to the Swan. In 1995 Swarovski celebrated its centenary with parties around the world and launching limited edition items like the Swan Pin. Swarovski vintage pieces are highly prized and extremely collectible today.
