Item Description

Huge 18th Century hand crafted gesso over pine all seeing eye starburst fragment

A rare and oversized example of an 18th Century hand carved gesso over pine “Eye of Providence” or “All seeing eye” starburst fragment. Recently uncovered from a collector in Paris, in untouched form. Often featuring radiating lines emanating from a central point, have been used as decorative motifs in various cultures and time periods.

The central design may incorporate the Eye of Providence, a symbol representing divine omniscience. Similar pieces have been found in religious settings, such as churches, and date back to the 1700s. Sunbursts were a popular motif during the reign of Louis XIV, who adopted the sun as his emblem.

Size in inches: H 40” x W 41” x D 5”
