Item Description
19th Century Napoleonic Prisoner of War Painted Casket Dominoes Set
A stunning example of an early 19th century Napoleonic prisoner of war hand painted casket dominos set. One of the most detailed and finely hand carved pieces of folk art we have had the pleasure to uncover, this item is larger than the norm. Quite simply, amazing attention to detail and a work of art.
Many prisoners of war from the late eighteenth through the early nineteenth centuries made craft items which they sold or traded to acquire a few small necessities such as soap, salt, cigarettes, and medicine. These items where made from found objects such as pine crates, mutton bone from leftover food and string or straw.
Size of inches: H 4” x W 4” x D 10”
Completely solid in structure and form, with natural wear and patination across all surfaces due to age and use. An authentic piece dating from the early 19th Century. A rare survivor considering its age, one of the glass panels is cracked, missing bone detail on the edges, one of the top bone slide sections is missing also. There are some lovely dominos and a few dice in this set also. Its strongly suggest reviewing all the photos provided as part of this advert and propose questions where sections are unclear to avoid disappointment upon purchase.
