Item Description
This is a pair of absolutely magnificent and extremely rare antique Italian brass reliefs that date from the 17th century or possibly even earlier. Created with great artistry and craftsmanship in the Renaissance style with "le grottesche" or fantastic and curious creatures - in this case mermaids and mermen - these exquisite treasures were once decorative panels that even today look truly fabulous. In the centre of each are portraits, one with a male and the other one with a female. Each portrait is held by two stunning mermaid figures [also one male and one female]. These artworks are made of brass in a deep relief that gives them a captivating 3D effect. Each one measures about 56 x 33 x 4 cm or approximately 22 x 13 x 1.5 inches and are in lovely antique condition with signs of ageing mainly seen in a wonderful timeworn patina. Recently I framed them in elegant black wood frames that in my opinion enhance their beauty and splendour today. They are exactly as I discovered them recently.
