Item Description
This is a glorious and extremely rare ancient French painting of Archangel Michael that dates from the early 17th century or even earlier. Discovered in the South of France this outstanding treasure is an oil on canvas portrait of the magnificent angel looking directly at the viewer. His face is gentle yet mysterious. With one hand pointing to the Heavens and the other one on his waist he wears the red cape with tassels while bearing the inscription QSD with a radiating light on his chest. This stands for "Quis sicut Deus?", a Latin sentence meaning "Who [is] like God?" and it is a literal translation of the name Michael.
The painting measures about 77 x 56 cm or approximately 30 x 22 inches and it is in lovely timeworn condition that in my opinion only enhances its true beauty and splendour today. Please bear in mind that this remarkable artwork is about 400 years old, or even more. Recently it was framed in a black wooden frame with a gilded detail. It measures about 89.5 x 69 cm or approximately 35.2 x 21.1 inches. Otherwise the painting is exactly as I discovered it. For the full condition please refer to the images!
