Item Description

A mid-late 19th century antique Italian alabaster sculpture depicting Leda and the Swan mounted on a green marble base. This figure of neoclassical interest is brilliantly detailed, the seated Leda with a veil in her hair and one arm raised to her head, the other affectionately lowered towards the swan.

With an air of elegance, this relatively large scale piece will look stunning placed on a sideboard or console in any home.

LEDA & THE SWAN

According to Greek mythology, the mighty Zeus transformed into a swan in order to seduce the Spartan Queen, Leda.

This story of legend has been captured in art by many over the centuries including Leonardo da Vinci. The earliest sculpture still in existence is a 1st century Roman original considered to be a copy of an earlier statue attributed to 4th century BC Greek sculptor, Timotheus.

CONDITION REPORT

Good structural condition. Alabaster has minor surface discolouration. Historic repair to the back right by her foot. Various chips and losses to the extremities, especially fingers and toes. Swan head and neck were carved as a separate piece and then fitted onto the body. Marble base has minor wear including scuffs, scratches and restorations.
