Item Description

A miniature ebony coffin, finely fashioned from the solid with a silvered brass slide-off lid engraved with a heralding angel and skull with crossed bones.

Further engraved “In memory of Mrs Ann Downar who died suddenly whilst walking by the side of her husband, in the new square, of the Carriage Department, Royal Arsenal, Woolwich in Kent, three quarters past three o’clock, in the afternoon of November 2nd 1815. Aged 45 years and 5 months. Her last words was “O dear me how dizzy my head is, how dizzy I am.” She fell, and instantly expired without a groan leaving a husband and three children to lament her loss.
