Item Description
A fine mezzotint portrait of the English courtier Lady Philadelphia Carey, “Published Jan 1st 1781 by John Boydell, Engraver in Cheapside London.”
Engraved by Robert Dunkarton after the original painting by Sir Anthony Van Dyke.
Within a fine replica of an eighteenth century print frame with a sanded and gilded slip.

Dunkarton (1744-1811) was initially a portrait artist, working in oils and crayons. He exhibited at the Society of Artists from 1774 until 1779, after which date he concentrated on printmaking.
Anthony Van Dyke (1599-1641) was a Flemish artist who became the principal court painter to Charles 1st following his appointment to the position in 1632, the same year he was knighted.
Philadelphia Carey was lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth, briefly Queen of Bohemia, the only surviving daughter James VI of Scotland and I of England. Her mother was the wife of King James; Anne of Denmark. She was the elder sister of Charles I.
