Item Description

A fine Victorian portrait of Sarah Welsh by John Prescott Knight RA. (1803-1881).

Depicted seated on a leather upholstered armchair beside a mahogany drum table. Painted in oil on a prepared artists' panel and within a correct, period, gilded gesso frame.

18.5 in x 22.5 in

Sarah was one of three daughters to Francis Light, British Naval officer, explorer and the founder of Penang. She married General James Welsh, an officer of the East India Company in the Madras army.
John Prescott Knight entered the RA schools in 1823 and went on to exhibit 227 works over the coming years; becoming a council member of the RA in 1836. He established a successful practice painting portraits including sitters such as Sir Walter Scott, John Bright MP, TS Cooper RA, Charles Barry RA and Sir Charles Eastlake PRA. In his book, The History of the Royal Academy, Sandby describes Knight’s portraits as being painted ‘with a vigorous hand, a broad touch, good effects of colour, and all the expression necessary to distinguish them as striking portraits’.
