Item Description

This set sold in 2001 by G.J. Saville, dealer in Antiquarian Prints and Maps, as printed in circa 1775 from the plates sold by Hogarth’s widow Jane to John Boydell.
Mounted, unframed. Plate mark 15 3/8 in x 12 3/ in. With decent margins all round.

The original paintings fro The Harlot's Progress were destroyed in 1775 by the fire at Fonthill House, the country home of William Beckford; although the plates survived.
There is much to read about this series written by many authors but in short;

Plate 1. Moll Hackabout arrives in London at the Bell Inn, Cheapside, evidently seeking employment as a seamstress. However, she is intercepted by the pox-ridden Elizabeth Needham, procuress and brothel-keeper.
Plate 2. Moll is now the kept woman of a wealthy Jewish merchant, using his home as a place to meet her other lovers.
Plate 3. Moll is no longer a kept woman but a common prostitute. Through the door to the right comes the magistrate, Sir John Gonson with three armed bailiffs, to make the arrest of Moll for her activities.
Plate 4. Moll is now in Bridewell Prison, beating hemp for the making hangmen’s nooses.
Plate 5. Moll is now seen dying from syphilis.
