Dolphin Pedestal

An early 20th century buff coloured stoneware pedestal that could be used as a water fountain where the water could emit from each of the Dolphin's mouths, to support a piece of sculpture, urn or vase and even be converted to create a unique table by adding a glass or other top.

The quality of this circa 1900 item is very good, with crisp detailing to both the Dolphins and the ribbed stem and top, suggesting it is likely by one of the very good English producers, such as Doulton who made a number of garden features such as urns. It is quite heavy and in excellent condition, and very nicely naturally weathered.

It is shown raised on a cast stone circular stepped base, that can be purchased separately at £120. There is some chipping to the base on one side where some cement was removed, but this does not detract. The whole has an excellent natural weathering, showing this item has been used outside for some years. These two items go well together and the purpose of using a base with such a pedestal is twofold. Firstly to provide more height and make the pedestal look even more imposing and secondly, to provide some protection to the pedestal from frost if used outside and also to avoid any damage by inadvertent shoe kicking.

If you wanted to use the pedestal as a centrepiece for an urn, bowl or a table top, by using the stepped base, you could make it look even larger and place both on top of an antique grinding wheel that is mossy and lichened and then you'll have an even bigger statement piece.

Dimensions give are for the Dolphin pedestal only. They are 60cm high, the base is approx 34cm diameter and the top is approx 22cm diameter. If you added the stepped base the overall height would be approx 80cm.
