Item Description

A large hieroglyphic Ruan lamp by celebrated craftsman Peter Ellery, Tremaen Pottery, Cornwall, from the 1970s. It's appeal lies is in its size, design and having been handmade, which all make this a real statement piece in a room. A tactile and collectible lamp.

Recently re-wired, it is approx 36cm tall to where the lamp holder starts, and at the base is 25cm wide x 14cm deep.

The earthy tones and the raised hieroglypic decoration, a combination of brown and verdigris green, make this a lamp that will slot in easily with most colour schemes, from the country cottage to the chic London home.

ABOUT:

Peter Ellery, was born in Newlyn on 6th April 1932.

Following study away from Cornwall and teaching, he returned in 1964 following the loss of his mother, married and with a young son, he opened his first studio pottery in Penzance with the help and support of his sister Brenda an brother Angus. Peter, Angus and Brenda became the three directors of the newly-formed Tremaen Pottery, which started life in The Barn, Moorlands, in Marazion. The name Tremaen, Cornish for three stones, was chosen for the three directors, and the stone shapes used, and the logo was modelled on the 3-legged stone megalith, Lanyon Quoit. After a couple of years they moved to premises in Newlyn Harbour.

From here they expanded their workforce and even began selling to Heals in London. Ellery turned down offers to sell overseas, feeling that the 'mass-production' necessary would destroy the artisan craft pottery ethos he valued.Tremaen had now joined Troika and Celtic Potteries to become one of the "big 3" studio potteries in west Cornwall.

Peter Ellery, following a hugely successful career and having been mentor to many crafts and pottery talents, finally retired in 1995 and sadly passed away a year later. He is renowned for never having been a trained potter, but instead 'learnt on the job' and his talent extended not just to his creative skills, but to his innovative techniques. Everything was hand made and so no two pieces will ever be alike.
