Item Description
Khotan carpets, originating from the ancient city of Khotan in present-day Xinjiang, China, are renowned for their unique designs and high-quality craftsmanship - situated along the Silk Road, the city's carpets incorporate a wide variety of influences from both East and West. Khotan carpets are highly valued for their fine knotting, elegance, and historical significance.
This early 20th Century example, woven in high-grade silky wool, boasts a rare champagne field with a minimalistic pattern that is well-complemented by the designs of its three individual borders. The restrained palette features tones of amber, blue-grey, deep charcoal, and iron, all rendered in gracefully aged vegetable dyed colours; the subtle variation in tones throughout, known as abrash, lends even great charm and character to its otherwise simple composition.
This fine Khotan example has been preserved in very good practical condition for everyday use, having developed a tasteful age-related patina over the years.
A timeless piece with the versatility to compliment a wide variety of interiors, but which we believe would work particularly well in a mid-century styled room.
