Item Description
Large c. 1930s Tabriz Carpet
4.88 x 3.53 metres
The city of Tabriz in Northwest Persia has long been known as a centre for Persian arts, culture, and literature, but especially for the quality of its carpets, with a tradition dating back as early as the 14th Century. Thanks to its location, incorporating influences from nearby Azerbaijan and Turkey, its weavings are among the most diverse of any city in Persia. Antique Tabriz carpets are especially distinguished by their impressive artistry and close adherence to the traditions of Classical Persian rug weaving design.
This fine early 20th Century example employs an unusually restrained, understated colour palette, with a soft ivory field framed by a muted tan border, and grey and hazelnut accents in the drawing – rather than the deep red and navy blues often found in pieces of the same era. Combined with its delicate, all-over design, instead of the conventional central medallion, this works to lend the carpet a rare sense of space and balance.
Retained in very good condition for everyday use, with its borders preserved on all sides – its vegetable dyes have taken on a warm, characterful patina with age.
A sophisticated workshop weaving with a strikingly modern feel, to suit either a classic or contemporary interior.
