Item Description

This intriguing carved marble fragment, quite possibly a depiction of Christ dating to the 17th Century. Despite missing its head and lower limbs the craftsmanship remains evident in the finely sculpted musculature, the dynamic posture and delicate folds in the drapery. The anatomical precision, with visible ribcage, abdominal muscles and veins reflects the Baroque era's emphasis on realism and emotional expression. The slight twist in the torso suggesting movement, capturing agony and sacrifice associated with crucifix imagery. The lioncloth, draped naturally around the waist is carved with soft, flowing lines adding lifelike quality to the piece. The surface exhibits a weathered patina, with areas of minor discolouration and minor chipping consistent with age and exposure. Many such sculptures were damaged due to war, possibly iconoclasm or neglect leaving only partial remains. Even as a fragment this piece serves as a powerful testament to the artistic and spiritual priorities of the 17th Century, encapsulating the periods devotion and artistic mastery. Later Museum Stand Northern Italy or South Germany, Circa 1680.
