Remarkable Pair Of French Paintings On Wood Panels, 1600'S

This is a trully remarkable pair of antique French paintings on wood panels that date from the early 1600's or even older. Once they were most certainly the front doors of a cabinet as there are still the original locks found within the wood. Depicting the miraculous walk of Jesus this ancient treasure is magnificent in its presence as well as the artistic quality. This is further enhanced in my opinion by the stunning distressed patina created by the passage of time. Each painting measures about 80 x 67 cm or approximately 31.4 x 26.3 inches. They are exactly as I discovered them in the South of France, with signs of ageing that speak volumes of centuries past. They are highly decorative as well as powerful in their presence and meaning. The paintings depicts the story of Jesus walking on water - from the New Testament. It is recorded as one of the miracles of Jesus that tells how Jesus sent the disciples by ship to the "other side" of the Sea of Galilee while he remained behind, alone, to pray. Night fell and the sea arose as the ship became caught in a wind storm. After rowing against the wind for most of the night, the disciples saw Jesus walking on the water. They were frightened, thinking that they were seeing a spirit, but when Jesus told them not to be afraid, they were reassured. After Jesus entered the ship, the wind ceased, and they arrived at land.
